Very lightweight and low tension instrument. A real cimbalom player  would be shocked at this! It uses the Cimbalom pattern from the lower part of the instrument but avoids complicated top bit. A cunning solution taken from my dulcimer is to be able to play both sides of all the bridges effectivly extending the range considerably.

The instrument has a darker sound than the dulcimers.

I should make it clear that the instrument on the Portishead track is an sample of a Concert Grand Cimbalom (a very different instrument entirely) taken from a Lalo Schifrin soundtrack.
